My first quilt of 2016 is DONE! (I finished it a couple weeks ago, but I had to wait for them to get it!) I know, I know, another HST quilt, but what can I say… I LOVE them. Simple beauty. A K-State Alumni baby is on the way, and I knew that purple was going to be involved in some form or fashion. They did go with green as an accent color, so off to my little quilt shop I went!
They had a sale on precuts that I just couldn’t pass up, so I picked up several charm packs from Me & My Sister Designs for Moda Fabrics. I used fabrics from three different fabric lines they have Hi-De-Ho, Bandana, and Dot.Dot.Dash-!. They have similar colors for the three lines, so I pulled all the purple and greens from the three lines. I sewed a green and purple square together to make 2 HSTs. I arranged them into a scrappy herringbone look. I added a purple border around the whole thing to make it a little larger. I did use the same method I saw on Missouri Star Quilt tutorials for the binding. The back was made with this beautiful purple paisley minky/cuddle fabric. When quilting with the Minky backing, I spray baste and pin to help stabilize the minky.
Just to be a little humorous, there had to be a pop of orange in the sea of purple this kid will grow up in! I couldn’t have her miss out on the best color she may ever know.
For the quilting, I stitched in the ditch vertically, and then stitched 1/4 inch from the bottom of the chevron.
